I Can Tell When You’re Faking It
How to Stop Going Through the Motions, Reengage with Your Career, & Lead Others to do the Same!
We see it every single day – people going through the routine of their jobs, not because passion fuels them, or a desire to genuinely do good work, but because…well, “it’s a living.” In the past 4 years, uncertainty and anxiety about the economy has pushed people to perform at their jobs, but has also bred an epidemic of resentment and occupational disengagement. People are fearful and feeling a bit vulnerable after the last few years of expecting the worst, and many of them are hesitant to give all they’ve got to a job. Studies by the Saratoga Group have shown that almost 75% of people in the American workforce are disengaged from their jobs. Going through the motions in your job, even on the smallest level, doesn’t allow you to live up to your employment potential when it comes to leadership, creativity, innovation, and motivation. Worse yet, stagnation and boredom leads not only to job dissatisfaction, but also to other issues like depression, chronic fatigue, and other psychological detractions. For the company that employs these folks, the bottom line is a devastating effect on financial health.
The hard truth is this: You can’t hide burnout.
But you can fight it!
While talking about the causes of disengagement, this session addresses not only spotting the symptoms of burnout in one’s self and in his or her team, and also provides tools and methods to help combat it. We will discuss methods of self assessment and team assessment, as well as the impact of performance management on employee engagement and job satisfaction levels and explore methods to increase the effectiveness of employee evaluations as a career growth and motivation tool. While one of our goals is always to minimize voluntary turnover, we will talk about hiring practices that help to ensure building a team with forward moving energy. Attendees will also gain knowledge and perspective on the impact that a person who’s “faking it” has on the team that they are a part of – how those behaviors can hurt leadership and management efforts for the entire team – and how to minimize the destructive effects on other team members. Finally, we will touch on the importance of personalized efforts in motivation, and how to discover what works best. We will also, in this portion of the class, brainstorm different low cost and budget friendly options for motivating that go a bit further than using money to drive performance.
